Suicide Prevention Awareness: Breaking the Silence and Supporting Women’s Mental Health

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a crucial reminder that mental health struggles are real, but hope and healing are always available. In Kenya, many women suffer silently under the weight of severe depression, trauma, postpartum distress, or addiction. Breaking the stigma starts with changing how we talk about mental wellness and offering safe spaces for recovery.

Recognizing the Warning Signs

  • When a woman is going through deep emotional pain, the signs are not always obvious. Look out for:
  • Expressing feelings of hopelessness or feeling like a burden to family.
  •  Withdrawing from family gatherings, work, or social activities.
  • Sudden mood changes, severe anxiety, or uncharacteristic quietness.
  • Increased reliance on alcohol, prescription drugs, or other substances.
  • Giving away personal items or talking about "disappearing.

How You Can Help a Sister, Friend, or Loved One

  1. Start the Conversation: Ask directly and with genuine care, "Are you doing okay?" Listening without judgment can relieve heavy emotional burdens.
  2. Encourage Professional Support: Mental health challenges require expert care. Guide your loved one toward therapy, structured wellness programs, or specialized recovery support.
  3. Remove Danger: Ensure they are not left alone in moments of acute distress and remove access to harmful items.
